SANTORUM COMMENTS ON THE SUPREME COURT RULING ON PARTIAL BIRTH ABORTIONS

Washington, DC --U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) the principal sponsor of the Partial Birth Abortion Act of 2000, S. 1692, offered the following statement today after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a Nebraska law banning partial birth abortions:

“This is a very disturbing, yet sadly predictable day for our country. The practice of partial birth abortion is a heinous procedure that the American public wants to end. This rogue procedure is infanticide, pure and simple. The federal partial birth abortion ban is tightly written to protect the lives of both mothers and children, and I believe if challenged will be ruled as constitutional. I stand committed in my efforts in the U.S. Senate to pass legislation that outlaws this procedure and protects lives.”

S. 1692, the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2000, would federally outlaw all partial birth abortions except to save the life of the mother. A partial birth abortion is an abortion in which a fetus is partially delivered and then killed intentionally while all but the head is outside of the mother’s womb.
