NCJW Deplores Passage Of The So-Called “Partial-Birth
Abortion Ban Act Of 1999”
October 22, 1999m Washington, DC -- The National
Council of Jewish Women’s (NCJW) President Jan Schneiderman issued
the following statement deploring the passage of S.1692, the
so-called “Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 1999:”
“The National Council of Jewish Women decries Senate
passage of S.1692, the so-called ‘Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act
of 1999.’ Once again, legislators who oppose abortion would prefer
to play politics with women’s reproductive health rather than
address the serious business of Congress such as passing the
required 13 appropriations bills, most of which are already
overdue. It is appalling that after the Senate agreed to the Sense
of the Senate amendment which endorsed the Roe v. Wade
court decision affirming a woman’s right to reproductive choice,
that the Senate would pass S.1692 which clearly violates
Roe.
As this debate comes before Congress for the third
time, it is clear that this is yet another vehicle to further the
agenda of those who oppose all abortions. S.1692 devalues women
and their families, deeming them incapable of being moral decision
makers, who make choices based on their diverse religious beliefs
and traditions as well as their consciences.
The members of NCJW strongly support a woman’s right
to make her own medical decisions in consultation with her family,
her doctor and in accordance with her own religious beliefs. These
personal decisions belong within a family or doctor’s office, not
on the floor of Congress.”
NCJW is a volunteer organization, inspired by Jewish
values, that works to improve the quality of life for women,
children, and families and to ensure individual rights and freedoms
through research, education, and community service programs
initiated by our network of volunteers nationwide.
