Export Controls
It is essential that Congress, the Administration and the American computer industry work together to develop a system that both promotes U.S. national security and maintains U.S. technological leadership.

Led by CSPP, the American computer industry established the Computer Coalition for Responsible Exports (CCRE) to inform policymakers and the public about the nature of the computer industry -its products, markets and technological advances.

Export control policies need to keep pace with rapid technological advances if they are to remain effective and meaningful.  Failure to update controls this year will force the U.S. government and industry to devote considerable resources to policing exports of tens of thousands of commercial products that are readily available from foreign competitors.  The result will be lost sales for U.S. computer companies -- leading to a decline in U.S. technological leadership and global competitiveness.

The current process for updating the export control regulations on commercial computers needs to become more responsive to rapidly changing technology if U.S. export controls are to continue to promote U.S. national security and maintain U.S. competitiveness.
