Letter from UAL Captain to Senator

Subject: S. 361

Dear Senator,

Once again I am writing to seek your support for S 361. I was prompted to write again having just listened to a speech given by President Bush on saving for retirement and how the government was trying to help. In his speech he stated that today's population is living longer and healthier lives. As a result he stressed that Americans need more than ever to prepare for more years in retirement. I share that sentiment but find myself unable to accomplish the task due to the archaic FAA Age 60 Rule that requires me to stop flying as an airline pilot when I reach age 60. The rule is nothing less than age discrimination and counter to the government's own finding that people are healthier and living longer. The government has raised the age to qualify for social security yet not let airline pilots work to the point where they qualify. The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) supports the Age 60 Rule only because the majority of the members are under age 55 and want the older pilots out so younger pilots can move up. I find it ironic however that the ALPA Board recently changed the bylaws to allow themselves to serve past age 60 . I would like that same opportunity to continue my career. As you know, other countries have increased the age for airline pilots and suffered no erosion of safety. It is only time that the US follow that same road. Again, I seek your support to pass S 361 and correct a wrong by our government that clearly states that age discrimination itself is wrong.

Sincerely, John W. Myer

Captain, UAL

OK Guys, here is a sample of what some of the pilots are doing. It just takes a few minutes, and 34 cent stamp. We need you to write letters to your two Senators and your Congressman.
