Statement by Commerce Secretary Don Evans on Meeting with Steel Union Leaders

Washington, DC - "The Administration is committed to open and fair competition ensuring that U.S. workers are competing on a level playing field in the global market place. Towards that end, we met with union leaders from the U.S. steel industry."

"Today's meeting comes on the heels of similar meetings with industry leaders and members of Congress. The meeting was very productive and gives us a better perspective as we consider possible steps the U.S. government could take to help address concerns regarding global overcapacity and market distorting practices by our trading partners."
