ROCKEFELLER ANNOUNCES SECTION 201 FORMALLY SUBMITTED TO ITC TODAY
Senator Says Action Could Not Have Come Soon Enough

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) applauded the Bush Administration today for sending their 201 petition to the International Trade Commission (ITC). The petition instructs the ITC to initiate a Section 201 trade investigation into foreign dumping of steel. Rockefeller has also asked the Senate Finance Committee to pursue sending a 201 petition to the ITC.

Two weeks ago the Bush Administration announced that they would ask the ITC to initiate a Section 201 investigation after intense pressure from Congress, the industry, and steelworker unions.

"Today is an important day in the fight to save steel because every day, every hour is critical to the survival of steel producers," Rockefeller said. "I commend the Administration for taking this action now. Although I must admit that I am concerned it may not be soon enough. It is going to take at least four months before even the first vote is cast on this case."

"I still intend to pursue a 201 petition through the Finance Committee. This will send a strong signal to the ITC that both the Administration and Congress back this investigation and expect it to be comprehensive," Rockefeller continued.

Rockefeller added, "In order for this investigation and the remedy to be successful, it must be comprehensive in nature."
