SPECIALTY STEEL INDUSTRY REACTION TO
PRESIDENT'S TRADE INITIATIVES ON STEEL

(Washington, DC) -- The Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA) issued the following statement from its Chairman, H.L. Kephart, also President and Chief Executive Officer of G.O. Carlson, Inc., a specialty steel producer in Thorndale, Pennsylvania.

STATEMENT
The Specialty Steel Industry of North America welcomes and supports the initiatives announced by the President today. This program includes key features of our recommendations to the Administration earlier this year, such as section 201 cases, measures to reduce global overcapacity, and negotiations with our trading partners to eliminate market-distorting practices such as government subsidies. U.S. producers of stainless steel and other specialty steels look forward to working with the Bush Administration in the implementation of these initiatives. We wish to thank in particular President Bush, Secretary of the Treasury Paul O'Neill, Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans and United States Trade Representative Robert Zoellick for their extraordinary personal efforts to come to grips with the trade problems facing the steel industry. From the earliest days of the new Administration, they recognized the urgency of the situation and worked with us to develop solutions designed to address both short- and long-term issues.

SSINA is a Washington, DC-based trade association representing virtually all continental specialty steel producers. Specialty steels are high technology, high value stainless and other specialty alloy products.
