REP. YOUNG VOTES TO ASSIST SENIORS WITH MEDICARE PRESCRIPTION DRUG BILL

Washington, D.C. - Alaska Congressman Don Young voted to pass the Medicare Prescription Drug Bill (H.R.4954). This bill will offer Medicare beneficiaries prescription drug coverage through private insurance companies. The House of Representatives worked past midnight to pass the bill by a vote of 221-208.

"This is important for Alaska because it lowers the cost of medication and guarantees all seniors Medicare prescription drug coverage. The bill offers extra assistance for those living on a fixed income. The fact is, seniors need the peace of mind that they are covered should a catastrophic illness hit," said Rep. Young.

H.R. 4954 will correct existing inequities by infusing billions of dollars over the next two years into rural and small urban hospitals. This would greatly benefit Alaska's rural healthcare, which according to Medicare Enrollment Statistics has an enrollment of over 41,885 as of March 2001. Through this bill seniors can expect an improved Medicare system with more choices and savings.

In March the House passed a budget blueprint to provide $350 billion over the next ten years. This is nearly twice the amount proposed by the Bush Administration."

"I am pleased the House has taken steps to secure the healthcare future of our seniors. They need relief from the high cost of prescription drugs. Very frankly, no senior should have to choose between purchasing food and medicine."
