AARP Issue Statement
Statement by AARP CEO Bill Novelli on "LillyAnswers" Prescription Drug Program

AARP is pleased that Eli Lilly and Company is offering a useful new program to assist low-income Medicare beneficiaries to afford the Lilly medications they need. We will inform our members about this new program, as well as others that provide assistance to consumers.

With LillyAnswers, the company is joining a small group of manufacturers to address a part of the large, unmet need for affordable prescription drugs. AARP is calling on the rest of the industry to offer similar programs to help consumers to have access to the prescription drugs they need.

We call on Eli Lilly and the rest of the prescription drug industry to support an affordable and meaningful prescription drug benefit in Medicare.

It is important to note that neither the Lilly program, nor other company-sponsored discount cards or plans, are substitutes for affordable prescription drug coverage in Medicare. Virtually all Medicare beneficiaries are reeling from soaring drug costs, not just those with the lowest incomes or those who use the most medicine.

AARP is expanding its efforts to secure passage of comprehensive, universal, and affordable drug coverage as part of Medicare. We are asking Congress to enact legislation this year, with sufficient funding for a benefit that seniors will recognize as providing real value.
