Legislation designed to restrict predatory lending practices, expand consumer protections, and strengthen enforcement of existing protections has been introduced in the US Senate. "The Predatory Lending Consumer Protection Act of 2002," introduced by Senator Paul S. Sarbanes, a Maryland Democrat, and cosponsored by Democratic senators Edward Kennedy and John Kerry of Massachusetts, would enhance civil remedies and statutory penalties.
