"Education Works Act" (S.
2458) Senator Bingaman On May 22nd, Senator Jeff
Bingaman (D-NM) introduced the "Education Works Act" (S. 2548),
which eliminates the current 12-month limit on vocational education,
eliminates the current 30 percent cap on the percentage of a state's
TANF caseload allowed to be engaged in education and training, and
counts post-secondary education, adult basic education, and English
as a Second Language as allowable work activities. The legislation
also allows states to provide non-cash assistance such as childcare
and transportation, without counting that assistance against TANF
recipients' five-year time limit if they are participating in
education programs. Senator Bingaman's bill is co-sponsored by
Senators Wellstone (D-MN), Corzine (D-NJ), Murray (D-WA), and Reed
(D-RI).
