DeMint Supports Bush Position on Cloning

‘I strongly oppose human cloning research’

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) released the following statement today in response to President Bush’s statement on the cloning debate in the U.S. Senate:

"Human cloning presents great moral and ethical questions, and I am glad that President Bush made his position on the issue clear today. Like the president, I strongly oppose human cloning research and the use of taxpayer money that would be used for that purpose. The exploitation of human life for research purposes is simply unnecessary and wrong. There are multiple avenues of promising research that hold great potential without resorting to risky science that harms human embryos.

"The House of Representatives acted last year on legislation to prohibit human cloning. I urge the Senate to carefully consider the President’s words and pass this important legislation for all Americans."

The House passed H.R. 2050, the Human Cloning Prohibition Act, on July 31, 2001.
