HEADLINE: Judiciary panel starts hearing on cloning

BYLINE: From Journal Sentinel wire reports

BODY:
Washington -- A Democratic senator joined opponents of human cloning Tuesday as the Judiciary Committee began hearings over a possible ban.

"The risks of human cloning outweigh the potential benefits," said Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, who decided to co-sponsor a bill that would ban all such cloning.

Landrieu joins Republican Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas in sponsoring the bill and breaks ranks with Senate Democrats, most of whom want to allow cloning for research.

For cloning opponents, Landrieu's support was a coup.

The House in July passed a ban on all human cloning. But many in the Democratic-controlled Senate have balked at a total prohibition and instead pushed to allow cloning for research purposes.
