ASRM President to Testify at Congressional Cloning
Hearing
Michael R. Soules, MD, President of the American Society for
Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) has accepted an invitation to testify on
cloning before the Oversight and Investigations subcommittee of the House
Energy and Commerce Committee. The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday,
March 28 at noon.
Representative James C. Greenwood (R- PA), chair
of the subcommittee, asked Dr. Soules to appear to discuss the safety,
legal, medical and ethical concerns regarding human cloning with a focus
on the adequacy of federal law in the area.
Dr. Soules’ testimony
will focus on three areas:
-
ASRM’s position that based on
scientific concerns about safety and efficacy, any attempt to clone a
human being at this time would be unethical.
-
The FDA already has the
authority it needs to prohibit human cloning, therefore additional
federal legislation is not needed.
-
The fundamental differences
between cloning and sexual reproduction, which explain why human cloning
is not as easy, or as imminent, as some media reports would suggest.
