Our Community, Health and
Environment Program serves to protect the basics: pure food, clean
water, breathable air and healthy communities. We continue this
vital work to protect the natural world and the human community in
the face of new threats, such as the genetic re-design of life and
globalization of pollution. We work closely with grassroots groups,
concerned individuals and coalitions to improve the health and
environment of their communities. We have organized around four key
efforts.
Over 80 percent of commonly used pesticides
are carcinogenic. Food corporations like Kraft are putting
untested, unlabeled genetically
engineered food in their products. We are identifying tax
subsidies for pesticides use, helping to protect farm workers and
are pushing for labeling and testing of genetically
crops.
Unfortunately, our legal system has not caught up with
the new genetic technologies. There are no laws or regulations in
place, for instance, to prevent human embryos cloned for therapeutic
medical research from being used for human reproduction. We are
educating policymakers about the consequences of not having strong
enough standards for both human and animal cloning. FIND OUT

We are working toward a vision of rebuilding
Washington, D.C.'s neighborhoods and communities for long-term
economic stability -- accomplishing this by protecting and restoring
the Capitol City's urban environment. FIND OUT MORE
New issues are always on the rise, so we must stay on the
cutting edge to protect our communities, our health and the
environment. For example, when a mystery corn was suspected to be
the cause of severe reproductive problems in pigs in Harlan, Iowa,
we took action. FIND OUT MORE.
