Biotech Lobby and Patient Groups Urge Senate to Say Yes to Human
Cloning
WASHINGTON (May 7, 2002)--Despite the support of President Bush, the Brownback-Landrieu bill to ban the cloning of human embryos has run into a wall of stiff resistance in the U.S. Senate. The biotechnology industry lobby and
patient-advocacy groups are attacking the bill in costly advertising
campaigns, including TV ads. The bill, authored by Sen. Sam Brownback
(R-Ks.), is also under fire from groups of scientists and from editorial
boards at various newspapers. Does "research cloning" create a human embryo?
Last-Minute Vote Switches Keep Assisting Suicide Illegal in Hawaii By Jenny Nolan, Legislative Assistant A bill to legalize assisting suicide in Hawaii was defeated 14-11 in the state Senate May 2 when three state senators who had previously voted in favor of it switched their votes. The "Death with Dignity" bill had been passed by Hawaii's House of Representatives, and was strongly supported by Hawaii's outgoing governor, Democrat Ben Cayetano.

* NRLC 2002 starts with a general session at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 27 and ends with the popular closing banquet on Saturday evening, June 29. * The convention is preceded by the Annual Meeting of the Association for Interdisciplinary Research in Values and Social Change on Wednesday, June 26 (8-10 p.m., in the convention hotel). The meeting is open to registrants for NRLC 2002. Presentations will be made on the following topics: Prenatal Care and Birth Services for Uninsured Poor Pregnant Women (Lawrence D. Jacobs); Perinatal Hospice: Madigan Army Hospital (Byron C. Calhoun, MD, President, Am. Assoc. of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists); Effectiveness of Ultrasound in Pregnancy Decision-Making (Eric Keroack, MD); and Personality Characteristics of Adolescents Which Increase the Risk of Abortion (Wanda Franz, PhD, President, NRLC).
