Nussle Seeks Quick, Smart Resolution
for Farm Bill

Congressman Jim Nussle and Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman found common ground regarding the agricultural budget and pending Farm Bill reauthorization during a House Budget Committee hearing today.

During the hearing, both Veneman and Nussle expressed concerns about the “front loading” in the Senate’s Farm Bill. “The Senate bill packs its spending into an initial five years rather than a more responsible approach that would spread the funding over a 10-year period,” Nussle said. “An approach that could shortchange farmers during the second five years is unacceptable. Farmers need a steady stream of support so they can make reliable planning decisions.” Nussle noted that he is working with the Speaker’s Office to ensure the conference committee produces a Farm Bill that is mindful of budget considerations.

“While I certainly do not believe the version of the Farm Bill passed last fall by the House is perfect, I am deeply concerned that the Senate’s version is unrealistic,” Nussle said. Nussle is chairman of the House Budget Committee.

“I pushed for the farm bill last year and included the necessary dollars in the budget,” Nussle said. “With the $73.5 billion incorporated in its budget for Farm Bill funding, the administration is now also fully engaged in this debate.”

“It would be the height of irresponsibility to force Iowa’s farmers to endure another year of uncertainty without a farm bill when Congress has had ample opportunity to finish its work,” Nussle said.  “There’s absolutely no reason this farm bill can’t be on time and within the budget.”

Nussle said that he agreed with the administration’s goals for the farm bill, including promoting market-oriented production, and making it consistent with our trade obligations. He also noted improvements in USDA service to Iowa farmers during the hearing.
