WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Daschle today
joined with his Democratic colleagues in releasing a set of principles to
guide consideration of a new farm bill that meets the needs of producers
in South Dakota and across the nation.
Daschle said the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, of which he is a member, has held hearings and is moving forward expeditiously to craft a new farm bill. Senate Democrats are focused on a plan that includes: • A counter-cyclical income safety net to ensure farm income stabilization • Conservation provisions • Competitive international and domestic markets • Community economic revitalization. "The economic good fortune enjoyed by so many Americans over the past several years has not been shared in rural America, and we need to address this," Daschle said. "These basic principles will help us in our efforts to restore a farm income safety net for families in rural America and, most importantly, enact a comprehensive farm policy that helps, not hinders, the ability of producers in South Dakota and across the country to make their livelihood." |
