Reaction Of Senator Patrick
Leahy To Senate Passage Of The Farm Bill May 8,
2002
[In a vote of 64 to 35, the U.S. Senate Wednesday afternoon
passed and sent to the President’s desk a new six-year farm
bill. Senator Patrick Leahy and Senator Jim Jeffords both
voted for the bill, which the President has said he will sign.
The bill includes a new national dairy program, initiated by
the Vermont Congressional Delegation. Leahy, a senior member
of the Agriculture Committee and a conferee on the bill during
the extensive House-Senate negotiations, led in ensuring
inclusion of the dairy program in the earlier Senate version
of the bill and in the final version. Vermont will benefit in
many other ways from the bill. For Vermont highlights in the
farm bill, see chart and narrative descriptions under "What’s
New" on the Leahy home page.]

Comment of Senator Leahy:
"There’s a lot of Vermont in this farm bill, and soon there
will be a lot of this farm bill in Vermont. The hardworking
dairy farmers of Vermont once again will have a safety net
with compact-level payments. This is a bill that will help
farmers and communities across the state, and in many
ways."
