[WASHINGTON (May 13) – President Bush today (Monday) signed
into law a new six-year farm bill that includes a new national
dairy program creating a safety net that will offer
compact-level payments to dairy farmers when prices plummet.
Sen. Patrick Leahy, who led negotiations on the national dairy
plan as a senior member of the Senate Agriculture Committee
and as a conferee during Senate and House, attended the
signing ceremony at the White House.] ______________________________________________
"The new farm law directly addresses Vermont’s needs. Dairy
farmers will have a safety net that includes compact-level
payments. Farmers and their communities will have
unprecedented levels of help for conservation. And our
neediest citizens will get nutrition assistance to get through
the hard times.
"There’s a lot of Vermont in this bill, and soon we will be
seeing a lot of this bill’s benefits in Vermont."
