UPDATE | HOUSE VOTES, REP. KIND LEADS REFORM EFFORT

EWG and Other Environmental and Taxpayer Groups Hail Rep. Kind's May 2 House Floor Effort To Cap Subsidies To Largest Farms

"Rep. Ron Kind is a true champion for farmers and the environment. Once again, he had the courage to take on on agribusiness on the House floor and convinced 171 of his colleagues to support reform. Thanks to his incredible leadership during this farm bill process, momentum has never been stronger for policy reforms to benefit all farmers, taxpayers and the environment."

Farm Bill Passes House By Narrowest Margin In Decades

Farm bills traditionally pass by wide margins because they have something for everyone. However, the final passage of this year's farm bill on May 2 was the worst showing for the House Agriculture Committee in decades.

Final passage vote today was 280-141. The Freedom to Farm Act of 1996 was much more popular: it passed 318-89. The 1990 farm bill passed 318-102, and the the 1985 farm bill vote was 325-96.

Taking these numbers into account, along with countless newspaper stories, editorials and overall public outcry, it's safe to say that America wants and needs farm policy reform to help family farmers, taxpayers, and the environment.
