Harmful Milk Pricing Laws Dodged in
2001; Debate Resumes in 2002
Congress was unable to pass legislation in 2001 that would renew
or expand interstate dairy compacts; they also rejected other, more
onerous dairy proposals, leaving the debate for the next session of
Congress. The hard work of many member companies contributed greatly
to IDFA's success in spearheading lobbying efforts and coalition
activities to line up enough votes against provisions that would
further distort dairy markets.
IDFA Senior Group Vice President Connie Tipton commented, "The
impact of constituent contacts was evident as we came down to the
wire at the end of the session. Individual involvement by company
personnel signals real concerns and gets politicians' attention. The
contacts really made a difference. We're grateful and thankful for
the great support from our members."
The debate will begin again soon after Congress returns on
January 23; a resolution of the farm bill is expected early in the
year. For more details, click
