Major Accomplishments: 1980-2002
- Contributed to important energy legislation
including the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act of 1987,
the Energy Policy Act of 1992, the energy title of the Farm
Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002, and energy legislation
passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in 2001 and the Senate
in 2002.
- Led successful efforts to establish and update
minimum-efficiency standards for residential appliances, motors,
lighting products, and other equipment—standards that have already
saved consumers more than $50 billion and that ultimately will
result in net economic benefits to consumers of more than $150
billion.
- Contributed to President Bush's National Energy Policy and
President Clinton's U.S. Climate Change Action Plan and Climate
Change Technology Initiative.
- Helped defend and obtain additional funding for federal energy
efficiency research, development, and deployment programs.
- Led the design of programs that are stimulating sales of
innovative technologies such as resource-efficient clothes
washers; high-efficiency air conditioners; and energy-efficient
motors, transformers, traffic lights, and furnaces.
- Provided widely cited analyses of the technical and economic
feasibility of improving vehicle efficiency.
- Played an instrumental role in rebuilding policy support for
car and light truck fuel economy standards.
- Helped several utilities (including Boston Edison, CINergy,
Pacific Gas and Electric Company, New England Electric, Northern
States Power, Commonwealth Edison, and Potomac Electric Power
Company) develop new energy efficiency programs.
- Helped develop programs and regulatory policies to remove
barriers to combined heat and power systems that have been adopted
in California, New York, Texas, and nationally.
- Assisted various regional organizations, state agencies, and
advocacy groups in the design and analysis of state-of-the-art
energy efficiency policies and programs.
- Issued a series of key studies on energy efficiency and
economic development, making the case for job creation and other
economic benefits of sustainable energy and climate strategies.
- Helped design and implement DOE/EPA's ENERGY STAR, Motor
Challenge, and Combined Heat and Power Challenge
programs.
- Played a key role in establishing the Consortium for Energy
Efficiency, the Super Efficient Refrigerator Program, the
Appliance Standards Awareness Project, the Building Codes
Assistance Project, Compressed Air Challenge, the Midwest
Energy Efficiency Alliance, the New Buildings Institute, and the
Southwest Energy Efficiency Project.
- Developed ACEEE's Green Book®, the first
comprehensive green buyers' guide for cars and light trucks.
- Organized 16 major Summer Studies on energy efficiency in
buildings and industry. Hosted five Market Transformation
Symposiums and co-organized several major conferences on
sustainable transportation energy strategies.
- Published 20 books, 15 conference proceedings, and over 225
research reports that are widely used by energy professionals.
- Sold or distributed over 130,000 copies of our popular
Consumer Guide to Home Energy Savings and over 13,000
copies of three other consumer guides.
- Filled publication orders totaling over $2.2 million between
1986 and 2002.
- Helped establish and regularly assisted PROCEL—a successful
national electricity conservation program in Brazil.
- Spearheaded development of initiatives to improve the
efficiency of motors and air conditioners in China and assisted
with initiatives to improve Chinese refrigerators and lighting
systems.
- Assisted national energy efficiency centers and programs in
Poland, the Czech Republic, and Thailand, including helping to
develop new appliance efficiency standards for Thailand.
