Alliance Elects Maine's Senator Collins as New Vice Chair
U.S. Sen. Susan M. Collins (R-Maine), a strong voice for energy efficiency and bipartisanship in national policymaking, was recently elected the new vice chair of the Alliance to Save Energy. The first woman to hold the office, Sen. Collins carries on the Alliance's tradition of bipartisan leadership. Her career has encompassed the business, consumer, government, and environmental sectors that reflect the composition of the Alliance. [See Senator Collins's web site.]

In a Senate floor statement following the September 11 attacks, Sen. Collins said that the U.S. can achieve greater and more immediate energy security through increased energy efficiency. She also noted that the country could cut reliance on foreign oil by more than 50 percent by increasing energy efficiency, and that such a policy would benefit U.S. consumers with reduced energy prices.

During Senate debate earlier this year on national energy legislation, Sen. Collins supported energy efficiency in four separate votes -- three on improving vehicle fuel economy and one on air conditioner efficiency. She is the lead Republican in efforts to increase efficiency standards for central air conditioners and heat pumps, and has long championed the Energy Star program and low-income weatherization assistance. Speakers will include Alliance Co-Chair and Senator Byron L. Dorgan, Alliance Co-Chair Dean T. Langford, Gregg Easterbrook (Senior Editor, The New Republic), David K. Macarthur 'Genius' Award to David Goldstein

David B. Goldstein, energy specialist at the Natural Resources Defense Council in San Francisco, is one of 24 recipients of the 2002 Macarthur Foundation’s prestigious "genius award". The winners of this award receive $500,000 each.

Goldstein, a leading energy efficiency advocate, is widely known for his work on market transformation in the buildings and transportation sectors. The Macarthur Foundation in particular cited his pioneering work over many years in successfully promoting energy efficiency of refrigerators.

Goldstein is very active with the Alliance, including his service as delegate to Alliance Board member and NRDC President John Adams. Adams said: "David has been my colleague and friend for more than twenty years, and I simply couldn't be prouder of this award and what it says about David's extraordinary career and the role of scientific analysis and advocacy at NRDC."

Alliance President David Nemtzow added: “All of us at the Alliance and in the energy efficiency community are thrilled at this recognition of David’s extraordinary work. We have always enjoyed working with David and will enjoy his company even more once he receives his half-million dollar Genius award.”

Energy Bill Conferees Race the Clock

The congressional conference committee tasked to resolve differences between the House and Senate energy bills continues to race the clock to finish its work before Congress adjourns. Negotiators have hammered out agreements on a variety of provisions, including appliance and fuel efficiency standards and federal energy management, but many of the most controversial issues have yet to be completed. The key remaining efficiency issue is tax incentives for efficient homes, cars, appliances, commercial buildings, combined heat and power, and other technologies – including whether or not there will be such incentives for efficiency, the level of the incentive, and the criteria needed to qualify.
