In Washington
NEW LAWS AND REGULATIONS can have a big impact on the vehicles we drive, our lifestyles and personal mobility. CVC keeps a close watch on Federal policies affecting vehicle users, to help consumers monitor the government's activities.
These summaries cover major policy issues, with background and status information for each item. Check the issues you care about, and then make sure your voice is heard by policymakers in Washington.
Air bags: Dual air bags are now standard equipment, and in 1997, NHTSA allowed automakers to introduce "depowered" air bags to reduce risks for children and small adults. But NHTSA is now considering going back to more aggressive air bags, as part of its "advanced" air bag proposal.
Auto emissions: EPA's new proposal for "Tier 2 standards" would further reduce the already-low tailpipe emission standards for cars and light trucks, and set nationwide limits on harmful sulfur in gasoline. Vehicle users are concerned about vehicle availability and adequate leadtime, as well as costs. Anti-car lobby groups are pressing EPA to make the rule less flexible and squeeze useful truck models out of the market.
Fuel economy: In the late 1990's, Congress blocked the Clinton Administration's efforts to impose higher CAFE standards for light trucks. But pro-CAFE groups are now lobbying Congress to impose higher standards by legislation, despite the adverse impacts on vehicle users. CVC and consumer groups are rallying to oppose higher CAFE standards for light trucks, to protect consumer choice and highway safety.
