WASHINGTON - The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) has named U.S. Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (R-N.Y.) its first Environmental Champion of the 2002 election cycle. The Environmental Champions program designates strong pro-environment candidates running for federal office and supports them by raising funds and running campaigns to ensure they are re-elected to Congress to represent America’s pro-environment majority. Sherwood Boehlert’s lifetime LCV score of 81 percent and his consistent, principled leadership on clean air, clean water, and open space issues make him one of the most invaluable environmental leaders in the U.S. Congress.

"The League of Conservation Voters is proud to name Sherwood Boehlert to our list of Environmental Champions because he has built a strong record of fighting for a clean and healthy environment for upstate New York families," said Betsy Loyless, LCV political director. "Boehlert is a representative that the people of the 23rd congressional district can count on to protect New York state’s air, water, and open spaces. LCV looks forward to helping ensure his re-election and continuing to work with him in Congress."

During Boehlert’s tenure in Congress, he has consistently fought for commonsense environmental measures that protect the health and quality of life of New Yorkers. Last year, Boehlert attempted to promote a smarter, cleaner energy future for this country by co-sponsoring an amendment to the House energy bill that would have mandated higher fuel efficiency standards for America’s automobiles. He also co-sponsored an amendment to the House farm bill that would have provided $5.4 billion a year over ten years for agricultural conservation programs. In 1990, determined to combat the devastating effects of acid rain on the Adirondack Mountains, he co-authored amendments to the Clean Air Act that significantly reduced acid rain-causing emissions generated by power plants.

In 2000, LCV invested $1 million to promote Environmental Champions and earned a perfect record of victory. Sherwood Boehlert is LCV’s first Environmental Champion of the 2002 campaign season.
