WASHINGTON - "The debate over a national energy policy is at last moving in the right direction. After months of negative haggling over old, tired ways to meet our energy needs, voters will finally hear a positive debate about what’s next for America’s energy future, instead of what’s past. The Energy Policy Act of 2002 reflects newer, smarter opportunities for renewable energy and fuel efficiency to boost our economy, strengthen our security, and keep our environment clean.

"Americans expect our leaders to make the best choices for our country and they aren’t always the easiest ones. Tough decisions lie ahead for Senators who should commit to better fuel economy standards and a greater emphasis on newer, cleaner energy sources, while we protect our special places, like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Americans know that increases in fuel efficiency and a shift to renewable energy sources are the best ways to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and keep energy costs down for consumers.

"The debate over America’s energy future is clearly far from over. The Energy Policy Act of 2002 is not the final answer to our energy problems. But at least it asks all of the right questions."
