America
deserves a safe, clean, and affordable energy future. We
should use America's technological know-how to develop newer,
cleaner sources of energy and make our cars, homes and
appliances more energy efficient.
States
across the country are putting clean energy policies into
action. It is time for the Bush administration to forge a new
energy path instead of relying on the outdated dirty and
dangerous policies of the past.
We call on
Congress and the Bush administration to pledge to take the
following steps toward a smarter, cleaner energy future:
- Promote
a renewable energy standard requiring 20% electricity
generation from renewable sources by 2020.
- Increase the fuel economy standard for cars, SUVs and
light trucks to 40 mpg by 2013, reducing the oil used by
cars and trucks by one-third in 2020 and saving consumers
money at the gas pump.
- Ensure
a reliable and consumer-friendly electric system by
strengthening consumer protections. Consumers should not be
at the whim of energy giants such as Enron and Dynegy.
- Oppose
opening the Arctic Refuge and other sensitive lands to oil
and gas drilling. Given the benefits of renewable energy and
increasing energy efficiency, we should not drill in the
country’s last remaining wild places.
