New Orleans Group of the Sierra Club

Welcome! The New Orleans Group is the home of Sierra Club members throughout much of southeastern Louisiana south of Lake Pontchartrain, ranging from the mouth of the Mississippi River to the River Parishes. We have monthly programs, an active conservation committee, and an outings program.  As this web site evolves we'll be including more and more information on those.

Programs, Meetings, and Outings

General Programs are held at the Dominican Conference Center, 540 Broadway (one block south of St. Charles Avenue), New Orleans. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the program begins at 7:00 p.m. The programs are open to public and free of charge.   Click here to find information about upcoming Programs in our area, Conservation Committee Meetings, and Executive Committee meetings. General Programs are open to the public; the other meetings are open to all members.

New Orleans Group in the News:

Sierra Club to Canvass Uptown

Members plan to recruit door-to-door

Thursday June 12, 2003

Patricia Livingston

The Times Picayune, Uptown Section

The New Orleans chapter of the Sierra Club is directing a canvass of Uptown residents throughout June in a quest for new members and to stir up interest in the organization's campaign against the intrusion of industry into our country's national forests and monuments.

Monique Sullivan, who lives in our neighborhood and is an assistant canvass director, said that most workers wear official Sierra Club T-shirts or a pin to identify themselves.

If you have time to listen when they ring your bell, they can tell you about their efforts, or, if you're too busy, they have informative literature.

The Sierra Club was founded in 1892; the local group usually meets the second Sunday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Dominican Conference Center, 540 Broadway. The next meeting, however, will be a covered-dish supper in Audubon Park on July 14 from 4 to 6 p.m. Annual dues are $35, and there's a special membership rate of $20 for those who cannot be active in the organization but would like to receive Sierra, the group's beautiful national magazine.

The club's local projects include working to counteract coastal erosion and diminishing the pollutants that created "cancer alley" upriver from New Orleans. For information, call 314-1022.

Get Active!

The United States has only 3% of world oil reserves but consumes 25% of world oil production.  We cannot drill our way to energy independence!

*Let your Senators and Representatives know that you support increasing automobile fuel efficiency standards to 40 miles per gallon by 2012.  By 2020 that would save us more oil than we currently import from the Persian Gulf and what is expected to be economically retrievable in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge combined!

*Also tell your elected officials that you support clean, alternative energy such as wind and solar, and urge them to support a Renewable Portfolio Standard of 20% by 2020, which would require utilities to acquire 20% of their energy from renewable sources.

*The above measures are the way to energy independence, increased national security, over 100,000 new jobs, and billions of dollars of savings at the gas pumps.  Let those who represent you know that drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and America's other special places is not the answer!

*Contact Senator Mary Landrieu at United States Senate, 702 Hart Senate Building, Washington, D.C.  20510.  Phone:  (202) 224-5824;  Fax:  (202) 224-9735.

*Contact Senator John Breaux's office by Phone:  (202) 224-4623;  Fax:  (202) 228-2577.

*Join the crusade today and sign on to the Patriot's Energy Pledge here!
