Raising Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Standards

The Senate passed the Levin-Bond Amendment (s.2997) to the Senate energy bill (S. 517). The amendment, offered by Senators Carl Levin (D-MI), and Christopher Bond (R-MO), removes the language in the energy bill that would have raised miles per gallon standards to 35 miles per gallon by 2013.

Instead, Levin-Bond gives the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) two years to study the need for higher fuel economy standards, but does not specify a miles-per-gallon increase or a timeline for fuel economy increases to take place, and removes key safety provisions from the bill.

The Levin-Bond amendment passed 62-38. NO was the pro-environment vote.
