Who We
Are
The Basic Education Coalition, a group of 18 development organizations,
advocates for greater priority for early childhood and primary education in
foreign assistance programs.
The members of the Coalition believe that
basic education is a fundamental investment in reducing poverty and improving
social well-being. Equitable access to and quality of basic education
facilitates the range of development goals. Basic education:
- Enhances economic growth
- Advances social well-being by improving health and nutrition, reducing
child labor, lowering the rate of population growth, stemming the spread of
infectious disease and other health problems, and promoting equality between
women and men
- Supports civil society, democracy, and political stability
- Promotes understanding, tolerance, and hope
The objectives
of the Coalition are to enhance awareness and knowledge of the fundamental
importance of basic education and to increase resources and commitment to
quality education.
Coalition members have decades of experience around
the world working with communities and governments at all levels to improve
access to quality basic education. They have joined to maximize resources
brought to this endeavor, to broaden the reach of their efforts, and to share
experiences and lessons toward the common goal of enhancing investment in and
understanding of the fundamental role of basic education.
