Key
Facts
The
Basic Education Coalition seeks to
enhance awareness of the importance of basic
education for all. Comprised of 16
organizations, the Coalition is calling on
Congress to commit an additional $100 million to
global education in the 2003 budget, and to
raise that amount to $1 billion by 2006.
Currently, the cost of education to U.S.
taxpayers is about 70 cents per person; reaching
the goal of $1 billion by 2006 would boost that
amount to $3.50. Coalition members include CARE,
Africare, the Academy for Educational
Development, Bread for the World, Women’s EDGE,
World Learning and World Vision.
