BOEHLERT'S K-12 MATH & SCIENCE BILL PASSES SCIENCE SUBCOMMITTEE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A bill designed to improve K-12 science math and education introduced by Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY) was passed today by a Science subcommittee and sent to the full committee for consideration.

Boehlert's Science Partnerships Act, which would create new scholarships to attract top college math and science majors into teaching and establish four new university centers for research into teaching and learning, was passed by the Subcommittee on Research.

The legislation was introduced by Boehlert May 17, built upon President Bush's proposal to foster partnerships between universities and businesses with public schools.

"Today's action is an important first step to improve science and math education in America so we can better compete in our global economy for years to come," Boehlert said.

The bill is expected to be considered by the full Science Committee next week.
