CANTOR VOTES TO ARM AIRLINE PILOTS

Bill equips pilots to serve as strong deterrent to terrorists
WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Eric Cantor voted yesterday to authorize airline pilots to be equipped with handguns in the cockpit. The Arming Pilots Against Terrorism Act, H.R. 4635, would grant eligibility to the approximately 70,000 American commercial airline pilots to be deputized.

“This bill will make our skies safer,” Congressman Cantor said. “Pilots will now be the last line of defense protecting their passengers and crew. The legislation gives pilots the necessary weapons to thwart attempts by terrorists to duplicate September 11.”

This legislation will allow the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to deputize pilots, allowing them to carry firearms while on duty. Before being deputized to carry firearms, pilots will undergo Transportation Security Administration (TSA) training and background checks. The TSA will be responsible for establishing protocols for carrying guns, including where they will be stored and what type will be used.

Congressman Cantor concluded, “Arming pilots will help ensure terrorists cannot hijack planes and use them as missiles. The message to terrorists is loud and clear: you will not harm passengers or pilots without fear of ultimate retribution.”

The bill now awaits consideration by the Senate.
