Johnson:
Protect the Public; Arm Pilots
July 10, 2002
A 29-year veteran of the Air Force and fighter
pilot, U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson (3rd Dist.-Texas) voted to
allow, but not require, qualified and trained pilots to be
commissioned as federal law enforcement officers and to carry
firearms for cockpit defense.
“This measure protects people and pilots,”
said Johnson, a gun-owner and strong supporter of Second Amendment
rights. This is excellent news for the people of Dallas, as the
Metroplex is home for many airline industry employees.
“Since September 11th a significant number of
constituents have contacted me in support of arming pilots. This is
an excellent last line of defense,” continued Johnson.
The Arming Pilots Against Terrorism Act
authorizes airline pilots to carry handguns in cockpits. Preference
will be given to pilots with military or law enforcement experience,
but participation will be voluntary.
“Pilots have voiced nearly unanimous support
for using firearms to protect their passengers, their planes, the
public and themselves,” said Johnson. “Pilots want, need and deserve
the right to protect our skies and our people from terror as the
last line of defense.”
Before being deputized with firearms, pilots
will undergo Transportation Security Administration (TSA) training.
The TSA will be responsible for establishing protocols for carrying
guns, including where they will be stored and what type will be
used.
Also included in the bill is a provision for
flight attendant self-defense training.
The measure passed the U.S. House with
overwhelming bipartisan support by a vote of 310-113.
