The Arming Pilots Against Terrorism Act

July 10, 2002

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Congressman Marty Meehan voted in favor of H.R. 4635, the “Arming Pilots Against Terrorism Act.”  The legislation passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 310 to 113.  Congressman Meehan released the following statement following the vote:
“The terrorist attacks on September 11th made it clear that more needs to be done to improve aviation security. Since then, I have supported a number of bipartisan security enhancement initiatives to protect passengers and flight crews, including the Air Marshal program and increased passenger and baggage screening. Today's legislation provides an additional option of security to the overall package of improvements. Furthermore, this bill provides for a careful selection process with the necessary training, screening and oversight by the Transportation Security Administration.”
Congressman Meehan represents the 5th Congressional District of Massachusetts. He serves on both the House Judiciary Committee and the House Armed Services Committee, where he is the Ranking Member on the Military Research and Development Subcommittee.
