Rehberg’s Bill To Arm Pilots Passes In House Committee Today, Heads To Full House For Vote

WASHINGTON - Montana’s Congressman, U.S. Representative Denny Rehberg (R-MT), called on his colleagues today to support his legislation to arm qualified, deputized passenger airline pilots in America’s time of war.  H.R. 4635, The Arming Pilots Against Terrorism Act passed out of committee today on a voice vote and now heads to the full House for a vote.

“Today the Aviation Subcommittee supported our legislation to authorize qualified, deputized pilots to carry firearms in the cockpit to protect passengers from terrorist aggressors,” said Rehberg.

“The events of September 11th have dramatically changed how we must defend our planes and passengers.  I strongly believe that in the post 9/11 world we must allow trained, qualified and deputized pilots to serve as the last line of defense against future terrorist attacks,” continued Rehberg.

Under the legislation Rehberg has co-sponsored, pilots who volunteer and complete an extensive training program and federal background check will be deputized as federal flight deck officers and authorized to carry firearms while piloting passenger aircrafts.

“This is a common sense measure to further ensure the safety and stability of America’s air transportation system in a time of war.  Given the fact that the President has issued a standing order to NORAD to shoot down any aircraft that has been taken over by terrorists, arming qualified, deputized pilots remains the most effective last line of defense against air piracy,” concluded Rehberg.
