WASHINGTON – First District Congressman Paul Ryan today voted for legislation that would allow qualified, trained airline pilots to carry a gun in the cockpit. This legislation, the Arming Pilots Against Terrorism Act, H.R. 4635, passed in the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 310-113.
"Trained and qualified pilots should be allowed to carry firearms to defend themselves, their plane and passengers," Ryan said. "In our fight to stop terrorists from killing more innocent people, our pilots are a critical line of defense. We trust them with our lives every time we step onto an airplane. In today’s security environment, it makes sense to let them have a gun in the cockpit, as long as they want and are well prepared for that responsibility. Since September 11, we have been working to improve airline security in many ways, and this is another important step forward."
Before being deputized and permitted to have a firearm in the cockpit, pilots must undergo Transportation Security Administration (TSA) approved training. Moreover, before deputizing pilots, the TSA must establish the protocols for carrying guns, including where they will be stored, and what type of gun and ammunition will be used.
In addition, this legislation also includes a provision for self-defense training for flight attendants.
