Television Advertisements, Permanent Normal Trade Relations with China

During the spring of 1999, groups in favor of and opposed to PNTR for China aired a total of over 5,000 television commercials promoting their views on the subject. Here we provide data on each one of these commercials. First, we show a dynamic map of all the ads as they were run by the two sides. Successive screens in the dynamic map show the number of ads (represented by green and red bars) aired in each of the nation's media markets. The maps show the cumulative total number of ads in each city, both for and against the proposal, from the week of February 28, 1999 to the week of June 20, 1999, when the advertisements ceased.

We also have information concerning the various arguments each ad contained. For each distinct ad that was aired, we provide a PDF file representing the picture on the screen in six-second intervals. Captions show the actual words, usually spoken by an announcer. Clicking on the links below show these PDF files first for the anti-PNTR ads (of which there were two), and then for those in favor of PNTR (seven different ads). The Text link shows the content of the ad; the Data link shows the number of times that particular ad was run in a given media market and on a given day. These data files were merged and aggregated to produce the map shown above. (At the bottom of this page we also provide each of the 18 individual maps used to create the dynamic map so that users can look at them in any order, as well as a data file showing the actual cumulative numbers of ads by media market.)
